Recording New Media with Capture

Recording and capturing media to share with students and colleagues can increase the effectiveness and accessibility of courses, content, and concepts. PSU Media Space is PSU’s recommended tool for storing and sharing this content. 

 PSU Media Space has two options for recording and editing video content:

  • Express Capture is a simple in-browser recorder.

  • Kaltura Capture is a downloadable screen capture recorder, typically used for

  • capturing presentations.

Using Express Capture

Express Capture enables recording simple microphone/webcam allows you to record basic content directly from a your browser without the need to install any additional software. To use Express Capture:

  1. Select Express Capture from the Login from the PSU User drop down menu in PSU Media Space.

  2. Log in using PSU’s Single Sign-On (SSO) page.

  3. Expand the + Add New drop down menu and select Express Capture.

  4. Select Allow if your browser asks to use your camera and microphone.

  5. Make sure Select the correct Camera and Microphone devices are selected. Camera Settings menu to change your camera. Select Audio Settings to change your microphone 

  6. Select the Record Start Recording button to begin your recording. A three second countdown window is displayed.Start Recording. A timer is displayed next to the Stop and Cancel buttonwill appear. Once this countdown is complete, your recording will begin.

  7. Select the Stop button to end your recording. The following window is displayed.

  8. Choose Record Again to retake the recording or Use This to use the current recording. “Record Again” discards the current recording. You will be reverted to the Record button where you can retake the recording, Select Use This when you are satisfied with your recording (after as many retakes as needed), to upload to Kaltura. The Upload window is displayed.

  9. Select one of the following options:

    1. Select Record Again to discard your current recording and take another. 

    2. Select Download A Copy to save the recording to your computer.

    3. Select Use This to upload the current recording to Kaltura. 

  10. If Use This is selected, the video will upload to Kaltura. Once the upload completes, enter a Name for the video.

  11. Enter a brief Description as needed.

  12. Choose a Privacy setting Publishing Status. ( If you want to share your video using a link, set select the privacy to Unlisted radio button.)

  13. Select Save.

  14. Select Go To Media, and verify that your video plays. It may take time for the video to process before playing.

Express Capture in Canvas

You can repeat the above steps to create a quick Express Capture in Canvas.

  1. In Canvas, open the tool and item Determine where you want to embed your video. This is typically done a consideration when you are editing a page or replying to a discussion post.

  2. Place your cursor where you want the embedded video to appear.

  3. In the editor rich text editing toolbar, select expand the Apps icon drop-down menu (a power cord icon), and in the resulting menu, select View All.

  4. In the pop-up window All Apps dialog box, select Embed My Media.

  5. Select In the Embed My Media dialog box, expand the + Add New, drop-down menu and then select Express Capture.

  6. Once you record your video and , select Use This select followed by Save and Embed.

Download and Install Kaltura Capture

  1. Once logged in to PSU Media Space, select expand the + Add New drop-down menu, then select Kaltura Capture.

  2. Read the Copyright notice and click the box to agree to terms and conditions.

  3. Select the Download for Windows link If Kaltura is already installed, the Kaltura Capture Desktop Recorder will open automatically. You may need to approve a browser dialogue box to allow Kaltura Capture to open.

  4. If Kaltura is not installed, select Download for Windows or Download for Mac to download the installation file.

  5. Once the download is complete, run the file to install.

  6. If you are using a mac, Drag , a dialog box will appear, either drag and drop or copy and paste the CaptureSpace Desktop Recorder to into your Applications folder.

Adjust Your Recording Settings (Before Initial Use Only)

  1. Log in to media.pdx.edu

  2. Select Expand the + Add New drop-down menu, then select Kaltura Capture.

  3. The Kaltura Capture Desktop Recorder will pop up. You may need to approve a browser dialogue box to allow Kaltura Capture to open.

  4. Select the manage link.

  1. Select the gear icon to access the settings panel.

  2. You may now create a recording.

Creating a Recording

  1. Log in to media.pdx.edu

  2. Select Expand the + Add New drop-down menu, then select Kaltura Capture.

  3. Read and confirm the Copyright policy notice.

  4. The Kaltura Capture Desktop Recorder will pop up. You may need to approve a browser dialogue box to allow Kaltura Capture to open.

  5. You can customize which recording and audio devices are to be recorded. Select the screen icon to disable screen recording, select the camera icon to disable webcam recording, and/or select the microphone to disable audio input.

  6. Select the word Screen to verify or select your Screen recording settings.

  7. Repeat for Camera and Audio settings.

  8. Select the red enabled: 

    1. Select the Camera icon to enable/disable webcam recording 

    2. Select the Screen icon to enable/disable screen recording

    3. Select the Microphone icon to enable/disable audio input.

  9. You can adjust your recording and audio device settings:

    1. Expand the Camera drop-down menu to verify or adjust your camera settings.

    2. Expand the Screen drop-down menu to verify or adjust your screen recording settings.

    3. Expand the Audio drop-down menu to verify or adjust your audio settings

  10. Select the circular Start Recording button to start recording.

  11. A 3-second countdown will appear on screen.

  12. Once the countdown disappears, your recording will begin.

  13. Select the square Stop Recording button to stop the recording.

  14. Confirm Confirmation box will appear to verify that you want to stop the recording.

  15. The When the recording is stopped, the Kaltura Capture Menu will pop upappear.

  16. Optionally adjust the title, description, and tags for your video. (This can also be done after your video is uploaded)

  17. Select Save and Upload to upload to Media Space.

  18. Wait for the upload to finish, and follow the link to view.
