H and I Drives Overview

Everyone with an Odin account is given storage space on PSU’s network, on the H and I Drives. You can use these drives to save and access files from both on and off campus. The H Drive is intended for personal file storage, while the I Drive is a shared storage area used by PSU departments.

Security and Access

H and I Drives are backed up every night and are a good place to store important files. If your computer’s hard drive ever crashes, its files may not be recoverable — but if you have copies of your most important files on a network drive, like the H or I Drive, they will be backed up.

Access to the H Drive is automatically granted to every Odin account owner.

I Drive access is granted by department resource managers using the I Drive Access form. Only resource managers can submit the I Drive Access form. If you are not a resource manager, you must ask a resource manager to complete the form on your behalf.

Accessing the H and I Drives

You can securely access your H Drive and the I Drive from any computer that is connected to the internet.

Storage Capacity

H Drive

The capacity of your H Drive is based on your role at the university.

  • Student and affiliate H Drive: 1 GB

  • Faculty and staff H Drive: 10 GB

If you are a student or affiliate and you run out of space your H Drive, you will need to move or delete files. To check how much space you're using on your H Drive, follow the instructions in Use H and I Drives on Windows or Use H and I Drives on macOS.

I Drive

The capacity of the I Drive varies per department.

If you're doing work for a department, consult with your department about requesting access to that department’s I Drive.

Further Resources

If you have modified or accidentally deleted a file or folder from your H Drive or the I Drive, it may be possible to restore it using Previous Versions in the Windows operating system. Learn how to restore a file from your H Drive or the I Drive.

To request a new folder within I:\Staff, contact the OIT Help Desk. If your department has a point of contact for departmental IT support—also known as a member of the Technology Administrators Group (TAG)—they can make the request for you by completing the Network File Shares form.
