Operating System Update Schedule

Microsoft Windows and Mac operating system updates are installed at regular intervals on all OIT-managed computers in order to keep them secure and functioning at full capacity.

Update Schedules

Faculty and Staff

Faculty and staff updates are scheduled to install at 3 AM on the Monday that follows the second Tuesday of the month.

Labs, VLAB, and Classrooms

The majority of campus labs and classrooms are scheduled for installation at 1 AM on the Thursday following the second Tuesday of the month.

Sameday Systems

A small group of user endpoints are scheduled to install updates at 4 PM on the second Tuesday of the month (the same day that they are released by the vendor).

Employee Virtual Desktop

Most updates for the Employee Virtual Desktop are scheduled on the Friday after the second Tuesday of any given month, around 6 PM.

Reboot Counter

A reboot counter indicates that updates have successfully been installed but a reboot is needed to complete the process. For e.g. faculty and staff endpoints will display a reboot counter that counts down for 21 hours, unless your department has requested a custom reboot countdown. Reboot counters are not able to be hidden and are displayed to remind users to either restart the computer or save their files before leaving for the day. If the computer is not rebooted within this time frame, it will reboot automatically.

User Impact Example Scenarios

User is logged in: The updates are installed and a reboot counter of 21 hours begins. User is not logged in: The updates are installed and the computer reboots immediately.
If the computer cannot be woken at the installation time, the updates are installed shortly after the computer is powered on. User is logged in: The updates are installed and a reboot counter of 21 hours begins. User is not logged in: The updates are installed and the computer reboots.
