Welcome to your new device! Portland State University has adopted Windows Autopilot to make setting up your computer as seamless as possible. This process automatically configures your device with the settings, security policies, and a suite of standard applications used at PSU, eliminating the need for manual IT setup. It works anywhere in the world with a stable internet connection.

Follow the steps below carefully to get your device up and running.

Prerequisites

Before you turn on your device, ensure you have the following:

  • A Dell computer that was purchased via the Dell store in the PSU eProcurement purchasing portal, on or after May 2026.

  • A stable internet connection (Wi-Fi or an Ethernet cable connected to your network).

  • Your Odin email address (e.g., myodin@pdx.edu).

  • Your Odin account password.

  • Your multi-factor authentication (MFA) device (such as your phone with the Duo Authenticator app).

Step-by-Step Setup Instructions

Step 1: Power On and Initial Language Selection

  1. Unbox your device, connect it to a power source, and press the Power button.

  2. After a few minutes, the Windows out-of-the-box experience will begin.

  3. Select your preferred Language and Region when prompted, then select Yes.

  4. Choose your Keyboard layout (e.g., US) and select Yes. If you do not need a second keyboard layout, select Skip.

Step 2: Connect to a Network

  1. The device will look for available networks. Select your local Wi-Fi network and enter the password, or ensure your Ethernet cable is plugged in.

  2. Select Next.

Note: A network connection is mandatory for Windows Autopilot to download your organization’s custom setup profile.

Step 3: Sign In with Your PSU Email Account

  1. Once connected to the internet, the device will recognize it as belonging to your organization. You will see a Microsoft login screen where you enter your PSU email address in the format of ODIN@pdx.edu.

    1. Do not use your alias email address (<firstname>.<lastname>@pdx.edu).

  2. Next, you will see PSU’s SSO. Enter your Odin ID and password, and select Sign in.

  3. If prompted, complete the DUO Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) prompt on your mobile device.

Step 4: Wait for Device Setup

After signing in, the Enrollment Status Page (ESP) will appear. This page tracks your device configuration progress. Windows is working in the background to secure your device and install a suite of standard applications used at PSU.

The screen will show three main phases:

  • Device preparation: Secures the hardware and establishes the connection to Microsoft Intune.

  • Device setup: Applies security policies and network configurations specific to your organization.

  • Account setup: Prepares your user profile and installs a suite of standard applications used at PSU.

Please leave your device connected to power, powered on, and connected to the internet during this process. Setup can take anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes, depending on your internet speed and the number of applications being installed. Your screen may blink or restart during this time; this is normal.

Step 5: Finalize and Access Your Desktop

  1. Once all setup phases show a complete status, you will be directed to the Windows login screen or straight to your desktop.

  2. If prompted, log in one final time using your Odin password or set up Windows Hello (PIN or Facial Recognition, if your hardware supports it) if desired.

  3. Your background syncs may continue for a few minutes, but your device is now ready for use.

  4. If your computer needs to install drivers or a BIOS update, you may be prompted to reboot shortly after you log in. After this reboot, your device has completed setup.

Step 6: Installing Additional Software

  1. If you need additional applications, try installing them from Self-Service Software.

  2. Software not listed in Self Service may require a license purchase. For more information, refer to Software for PSU Department Computers.

  3. Existing software licenses may be transferred by submitting a Software Install Request.

Step 7: Data Transfer
